What do you typically do on the first day of school?

I've shared one of my activities for new teachers. But, let's face it, there's an infinity of ways to capture students on the first day of school.

If you would, if you've taught before, would you share one of your favorite ways to get the school year started well? It doesn't have to be a full-blown activity like I have recounted. It could just be an attitudinal or philosophical approach. Maybe just a tip, hint or reminder. Or something you always remember to tell students.
