Pedagogy

In my fifth year of teaching I became involved in a local community project. I fought for students at the area high school to receive academic credit for their work in designing, establishing and running the Depot Coffee House. Students did everything from pursuing and authoring grants to digging the structure's foundation. Anyway, I digress, here's my story:

During a task force meeting, the City Manager praised my pedagogical contributions and requested my additional involvement to ensure sound pedagogy. I smiled and nodded, as did the many other people in the room. The City Manager continued to interject the term pedagogy or an iteration thereof throughout his, what felt like a very long, speech. I continued to smile and nod.

Immediately following this event I high-tailed it to the closest dictionary and looked up pedagogy. Boy, what I relief I'd felt that I hadn't shown my ignorance by speaking up! Although I still wonder if somehow that City Manager wasn't trying to make exactly that point.

Haha, I know the feeling

Haha, I know the feeling Ellen. I have spent many hours in a dictionary looking up words that someone may have used in a conversation. Pedagogy was one of those words. However, it wasn't the language that I particularly enjoyed about this entry. It was the project you put in place. It really interests me. I always enjoy hearing about projects that current teachers are doing that I may one day use as a teacher. I especially enjoyed the fact that you were recognized and praised for your efforts. All too often, I hear the negative aspects of teaching and all too often I come to dread them and fear them, but whenever I hear "success" stories it pumps me up and makes me long to teach.
