North Carolina Association of Education

With the upcoming election, many of people are talking about who they are going to vote for and what their proposed plans are.

My Blog entry is about the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE), backing presidential candidate John Edwards, for the third time since his campaign began for federal office. The NCAE is an association that represents 70,000 educators and retirees in Edwards' home state.

Edwards has proposed several plans to help North Carolina Teachers by increasing teachers' pay, reducing classroom sizes in successful high-poverty schools, overhauling the No Child Left Behind education law and implementing an early childhood education program for all four year olds if he becomes president.

For the past two years in rural Greene County schools, Edwards has tested a "College for Everyone," a program that pays the first year bills for any student who goes to college. Edwards plans to take this program nationwide with an 8 billion dollar program. He is working to promote great endeavors in the world of education and to promote new teachers. Every teacher would love a better paying job, with a smaller classroom setting.

With an increase in teachers' pay, this would encourage more teachers to choose the field of education. "College for Everyone" gives children that do not have the opportunity to go to college that opportunity; that they too can make something out of their life? Do you believe that John Edwards' can make this proposed plan work, if he wins the 2008 election?

*hopeful*

This definitely makes me a little more hopeful about this year's election.  At least the ideas and concepts necessary for improving our education on a National level are being brought up and debated.  His ideas seem to put the respect back into education which has been dwindling for years since "A Nation at Risk".  The idea of making college available for everyone is too idealistic though.  I could see how one year of college could drastically change our nation's perspective and create depth, hope, direction, and open-mindedness within a large segment of the population.  There's also the demand of the workforce today that pretty much requires a degree to have a job with salary that doesn't require a burnout after 10 years.  Needless to say, it'd be interesting to see the direction Edwards goes if he does get elected.

I like his ideas, but...

Alot of candidates say one thing in order to get popular votes and then while in office turn around and do the opposite. How can we be sure of any of the candidates views today. I hope that if John Edwards does get elected that he sticks with his plan, but at the same time I have picked up the "Believe It When I See It" attitude.

I would like to think so..

Wow his thoughts and plans seem amazing! We need someone with such passion in office to help support and promote education! The things he plans to set into motion, such as and increased salary for teachers, is refreshing. It seems that few have understood the lack of respect given to this profession. The positive affect that he will have in the lives and future of children across America is outstanding..he gives hope to every voice!

election

This is going to be one of the most crucial elections we have seen. That is why I am encouraging teachers to go out, reserach the candidates positions and vote accordingly. After all guys, we live in a Republic, we hold the power of this government in our hands. And with all the needed reform efforts in our school system, lets get candidates in office that can change things for the better!!!!!!

I'm not so sure how this

I'm not so sure how this would all work out.

For starters, the first thing that jumped out to me is the early childhood education program for four year olds. I hope that I am just way too tired to understand what this is actually meaning, but I imagine this being like a kindergarten classroom, which would cause kindergarten to become like a first grade classroom, which would then cause first grade to become like second grade, and so on. I really hope that I am misunderstanding that goal. I already think that school systems are causing kids to grow up too fast. Think I'm crazy? When's the last time you stepped foot in a kindergarten class? It's a lot different than when we were there!

thanks

Thank you for posting this blog. I haven't kept up with the issues that the presidential candidates are talking about. I think this is great that Edwards is taking a step towards helping educators with their pay and students who are going to college. It is very much needed and as a future educator this is something to consider when deciding who to vote for at the polls.

In theroy i think that this

In theroy i think that this is a great idea. Not only does it give students that extra insentive to want to do well in school and graduate on time but it gives them something to work for. I also think that it is compleatly ideal to lower class size and to raise teacher pay...in a perfect world but i dont know how he is going to be able to accomplish all of these things becuase it seems that there is just no money for it...but if he does then go for it!

I think Edwards ideas are

I think Edwards ideas are great ideas but would they ever work? Teachers should definitely be paid more and I have never understood why they aren't to begin with. They are providing education for our children how is that a low paying job?? If Edwards ideas did go through and people did accept it and were willing to change... it would make a huge difference but for now it seems unlikely.

A student at Dabney

A student at Dabney Elementary School in Vance County shows her vocabulary tile to NCAE Vice President Sheri Strickland, who visited the school in celebration of American Education Week (Nov. 11-17). Strickland helped students make “vocabulary quilts,” which consisted of a collection of colorful student-made paper tiles, each with a new vocabulary word. Students received a new dictionary or age-appropriate vocabulary book to keep, compliments of NCAE.

Yeah, it's a great idea, but

Yeah, it's a great idea, but i doubt it will get the support it needs. Senators and representives usually go for what is in their best interests. You, also, have to think about the taxes involved in such an endevor. Most people like to go for lower taxes, and this doesn't propose lower taxes. We need higher taxes to pay teachers better, but most people who aren't want lower. What can you do? We need more people from the educational field in government, that's the answer. People who are interested in the good of ALL people.
