Clear Understanding

In my Education 3200 class, I have to do a project, and I joice to do my project on professors with thick accents.  I think that these professors should be required to take English pronunciation classes in order to make their English easier to understand.  I know that these professors are brillant, they are the smartest in their feilds, but their brillance "gets lost in translation."  This is not fair to the students, and it is not fair to the professors either because what they are saying is not getting absorbed.  Not only will it help the professors' achievement ranges, but it will also help them in their everyday lives.

Just a Little

While I understand your plight and have defenitly had my fair share of foreign teachers I'm not TOO sure I agree with you. Yes, it is very hard to understand them but I feel it is the least bit insulting to them. These classes are usually "core" classes, like the math and sciences that are taught. This all goes back to schooling these subjects are not ones that are as heavily emphasized than in other foreign countries. Of course someone has to take these jobs and it usually ends up being a foreign person. So next time you think about how you math professor can't pronounce English words remember the American student who did not have an interest at all.

In response to your comment

The teachers that teach my major, mathematics, do not pronounce English well, which really makes getting a math degree hard.  Not every American does not care about core classes.  I am not saying that they do not have a right to the job, all of these professors are brillant, but their "brillance gets lost in translation." Which is not fair to them or me.

you are absolutely right!

I love your project idea mainly because it is very useful and also because I can relate so well to how you feel. I currently have a teacher who is from the Ukraine. She does seem very smart, but it is very difficult to understand what she is saying. I think that if teacher's were to go to this pronunciation classes that not only would it help the students in the classroom, but it may even inspire other people who may have a think accent to take classes even though they are not teachers. Awesome idea!

I Feel the Same Way

I definitely agree with you on this one. It is not fair to us as students who have to deal with teachers like this. I would have never thought to do a project on something like this...GOOD IDEA! It was a sturggle for me in my ECON class when I used to be an accounting major to understand my professor, I won't mention any names, but yea. He was horrible and I knew I was done when he would ask us how to say or spell something...I said "Oh No!" "Are you serious?" This would be great if you could start a program or soomething along those lines for teachers who do not speak english that well and DEFINITELY can not teach properly with the correct english. Good Luck! If you need my input on anything then just let me know I would be more than happy to help!

I must say i do agree with

I must say i do agree with your topic. And i will clear the water.. it is not a slam to any professor! There are many brilliant professors and every piece of research they conduct helps East Carolina University. However you take these same briliant professors and put them in a classroom and many students are not following whether because they can not understand their professor or simple enough, the content is portrayed so far over the students head, they dont stand a chance  of understanding what is going on. It makes me wonder is some professors realize how difficult it is to understand them, and make the effort, or if they just don't care?
