How people out of the teaching profession view teaching

Recently my education class at East Carolina University we have been discussing how people view the teacing profession. It really makes me mad that most people think that teaching is not a real profession and that we are just babysitters while our students children are at work. What I don't understand is how these "educated" people can say these things because without teachers they wouldn't be in the profession they are in today. When I tell people what my major is it seems like half the people support me but the other half say oh your just going to be a teacher. Some people even say that why did you pick an easy major when I am so smart and I could have done so much more. I totally disagree with people that think teaching is easy or dosen't take brains. I think that these "educated" people need to be educated on what teaching really involves.

Agreed

I definately agree with you. It makes me mad to see that people think that this job is so easy and is just a major to fall back on if their other choice doesn't work out. I honestly do not want dumb people teaching my kids, or I don't want a teacher for my student that doesn't have their heart into it. I think it is important for those people that really WANT to be teachers to do it, but those that are just like, "well I guess I'll be a teacher, it is esay" need to go be something else. It is important for teachers to be well rounded and be heartful in what they do because they are helping shape the future with students.

Who TAUGHT you?

I think that it's funny how sometimes the "general public" bashes teachers saying that they arent intellectuals and all t hat stuff. The funny thing is , is that everyone in some point in time was taught something, by some form of a TEACHER. If your a lawyer- you went to law school, and tehre you were taught to be what you are today. Even doctors who attended medical school were taught how to perfom surguries and what not. So the next time someone bashes teaching for not being a respectable profession, remember that person in some point in time was TAUGHT to be who they are today.

Until next time-

Teachers Deserve Recognition

I totally agree with you.  I believe that a lot of people do not give teacher the recognition that they deserve.  They do not take into consideration that they would not be where they are at today if it wasn't for the teachers they use to have.  I believe that if people just thought about that for one moment then they would actually think different of teachers.

Without teachers, where would doctors come from?

I agree completly with you!!  It is so hard to hear people say, "Oh, you want to be a teacher?  but you are so smart!"  Seriously?  do they want their teachers stupid or something?  Teachers do so much and don't get the credit.  I once saw a commercial where a little boy told his dad that he wanted to be a teacher.  His dad said, "Oh come on... don't you wnat to be a doctor or a lawyer?"  the little boy replied, "Without teachers, where would doctors and lawyers come from?"  This is something that keeps me motivated in focused.

Teachers need Respect

I agree with everything that has been said. I feel that teachers are looked down upon although in order for the people out there in the world to be making millions of dollars, they went through school before they got there. If it is a law for children to go to school up until age 16 then teachers should be getting paid more because someone has to be in the classroom giving them the education that the government is requiring. They want all children to go to school, so that our economy and nation become a stronger, smarter nation, however teachers are never given credit for being the ones to get them to that position. Overall, I think people and the economy need to view teachers better, and give them more respect and credit then what they are given. They deserve it, and they should receive it.

Where's the Credit?

I have to agree with everything you said above.  People truly do not understand the important of teaching and how they would be nothing without is.  I mean HELLO......how do they think they got the job they have or are going to school for whatever subject...because teachers taught them or are in the process of doing so.  Without teachers it seems to me that the world would just be full of dumb people who have no clue about anything.  Teachers are strong individuals who put up with so much crap and never receive the credit they deserve.  Just like you people always ask me, "Why do you want to be a teacher?"  People need to realize that your career is not supposed to be about money, it is supposed to be based on what you love to do.
