How to be a diverse teacher

My name is Donna Francis and I am a sophomore at East Carolina University.  My major is elementary education with a concentration in reading.  One of my goals that I have to become an effective teacher is to be more diverse.  I remember when I was in elementary  school there was a lot of emphasis on Black History Month.  Children would do research reports, projects and have special programs.  Toward middle and high school however, it stressed the same people but the amount of work became less and less.  I also notice that there are months during the year celebrating other cultures but to me there is not a large emphasis placed on those compared to that of Black History Month in February.  I bring this up because I am Native American and Native American Heritage Month is during the Month of November which is "so nice".  Hispanic Heritage Month I believe is between September and October.  I want my dream classroom environment to consist of all cultures: African, Native, Indian, Hispanic, Asian and many more.  How come there are not a lot of study materials on people of diverse cultures and their contributions to society and how come there is not a wide variety of materials for African Americans?  I mean, I still remember almost the exact people we researched in elementary school: Martin Luther King, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Booker T. Washington, Bill Cosby, Malcolm X, Frederick Douglaus and many more.  Though these are the main people who have contributed a lot in our society and changed history, hundreds of other great African Americans are unknown to our children in the classroom.  So what should we as teachers do to have a more diverse classroom?
