Making Kids Dumb: Take Away Play

There is an article in this week's Public Education Newsblast, which, by the way, all of you pre-service teachers should definitely subscribe to. The link to sign up is here.

Anyway, the gist of the article is that play is not only healthy for young children, not only good for their brain development, their motor skills, their social aptitudes, their overall coordination and sense of personal efficacy--it should be incorporated into the very fabric of classroom instruction because it produces much better results.

Sign me up for Wisconsin

I'm all over this. We need to make sure that whatever is going on in terms of accountability, that it actually is legitimate, and that the tests are open and transparent. There are too many shenanigans that can be played to allow this to be a "black hole" of information.

So, I'm calling this C-TEST-WI.

Article calls for creation of "learning communities" for teachers.

I was reading through the latest publication about education and technology put out by Ed/Week.  This article is pretty interesting.

 The part that caught my eye though was the piece about using technology in the classroom, and more really:  how to get teachers more comfortable with using technology, and particularly new technologies created around social networking and blogging.  And then, how that changes what the job of teaching is about.
