What About the Children?

Children today face a number of obstacles that stand in the way of a complete education. The US government is pushing conformity in a nation that has so many different regions, people, and cultures. Do they really think that high stakes tests and strict regulations are going to better our country?

Some politicians argue that poor teachers are to blame for certain issues today. However, I do not think that the finger can constantly be pointed away from themselves without eventually questioning their argument. These teachers are to follow strict guidelines on class conduct and material being taught. Perhaps the politicians and others who are setting these standards should all spend a week in an actual classroom and see where the real problems exist. During my observations there were a number of children who acted up and it was difficult for the teacher to write the students up due to the steps that she was supposed to take in order to properly do so.

As an education student, and soon to be high school history teacher, I have begun to see many of the issues that surround public school education in America. Growing up as a private school student I was sheltered from much of what I have learned at East Carolina. I feel that all too often it is the children who are suffering due to the way in which the school system itself functions. There is too much emphasis put on what can and cannot be said in the classroom and what is to be directly taught in order for the students to be prepared for the so called standardized tests.
